“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.”
A single is released from salty lashes, and begins its slow descent down my face. The voices of the congregation blending together in beautifully imperfect harmonies, carry the weight of a joy that you cannot touch with your fingers but can feel in the depth of your soul. I breathe deeply — as if to inhale the richness of the moment — to become more attuned (and in tune) with the magic that is happening around me.
Curious, I open my eyes and peer at the family and friends that surround me in the traditional sanctuary. Still singing, some hands are raised to heaven while others are stoic faced while the words of surrender and praise pour out of their lips. For me, music has always been the holiest of experiences. I feel closest to God when harmonizing with other people. I feel His happiness wrapping around me, like the best hug ever.
